Most often, a forex bot isn't opening trades on MT4 because something is blocking it from trading: AutoTrading is switched off, the EA isn't allowed to trade on that chart, or the market conditions don't match its entry rules. Less often, the cause is a broker restriction, a wrong symbol or timeframe, or a lost connection. Work through the checks below in order.
Quick checks (start here)
- AutoTrading button: It must be green in the top toolbar. If it's red, no EA can trade.
- Smiley face on the chart: A sad face or an "X" in the top-right corner means the EA isn't allowed to trade. Press F7 (EA properties) and open the Common tab. Tick "Allow live trading."
- Tools > Options > Expert Advisors: Confirm "Allow automated trading" is ticked.
- Connection: Check the bottom-right corner for a connection indicator. If it shows "No connection" or "Invalid account," the bot can't act.
- Experts and Journal tabs: Open the Terminal window. Error messages here (such as "trade is disabled," "not enough money," or "invalid stops") usually name the problem outright.
Settings and account issues
- Symbol and timeframe: Many bots are built for specific pairs and timeframes. Attached to the wrong one, they may sit idle.
- Symbol suffixes: Some brokers use names like EURUSD.m or EURUSDpro. If the bot expects a plain name, check its settings.
- Lot size and margin: If the lot size is below your broker's minimum, or you lack free margin, orders get rejected.
- Spread and time filters: Many bots skip trades when spreads are wide or outside set trading hours. That's often intended behavior, not a fault.
- Broker rules: Some account types limit scalping, hedging or minimum stop distances. Ask your broker if you suspect this.
- Weekend or closed market: No trades will open when the market is shut.

Strategies only trade when their conditions are met. A quiet market can mean days without a signal. Before assuming it's broken, read the vendor's documentation to see how frequently it should trade.
Keep it running reliably
If your computer sleeps, loses internet or restarts, MT4 stops trading. A VPS can help with uptime, though it adds cost. Test on a demo account first and never risk money you can't afford to lose. Automated trading carries real risk, and no bot guarantees profits.
If you're unsure whether the bot itself is the problem, confirm current features, requirements and refund terms on the vendor's official site, or contact their support.
