Most traders don't need more indicators. They need two or three they understand, tested on a demo account before any real money is at risk. This guide covers which indicator types are worth learning on MetaTrader 4 (MT4) and MetaTrader 5 (MT5), where each one fails, and how to evaluate paid or free add-ons without wasting money.
Risk note: Forex and CFD trading uses leverage and can lose you more than you expect. No indicator predicts price reliably. This is educational content, not financial advice.
MT4 vs MT5: Does It Matter for Indicators?
Both platforms ship with the classic built-in indicators, and both accept custom indicators. The practical difference is compatibility: MT4 indicators (.ex4) won't run on MT5 (.ex5), and the reverse is also true. Before buying anything, confirm which platform and version it supports. MT5 also has more timeframes and an integrated economic calendar, but your broker's offering matters more than the platform. Check what your broker actually provides.
The Built-In Indicators Worth Learning First
Before paying for anything, learn what comes free with the platform. The table below compares the main categories.
| Indicator type | Examples | Useful for | Main weakness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trend | Moving Averages, ADX, Ichimoku | Identifying direction and momentum | Lags; whipsaws in ranges |
| Momentum / oscillators | RSI, Stochastic, MACD | Spotting stretched moves and divergence | Can stay "overbought" in strong trends |
| Volatility | ATR, Bollinger Bands | Sizing stops and judging market conditions | Describes the market; doesn't give direction |
| Support/resistance tools | Fibonacci, pivot points, horizontal levels | Planning entries, exits and targets | Subjective; traders draw them differently |
Moving averages
They're simple and widely watched, which is both their strength and limit. They work best for judging trend direction on higher timeframes, and they struggle in sideways markets.
RSI and MACD
RSI helps you see when a move is stretched. MACD helps you see momentum shifts. Treat both as context, not entry commands. An RSI reading above 70 is not a sell signal on its own.
ATR
ATR is underrated. It won't tell you where price is going, but it helps you set stop distances based on actual volatility instead of guesses. That is a risk-management use, not a prediction use.
How to Build a Simple Indicator Setup
- Pick one job per indicator. For example, a moving average for trend, ATR for stop distance, RSI for momentum context. If two indicators do the same job, drop one.
- Limit yourself to three. More than that usually creates conflicting signals and hesitation.
- Write your rules down. What conditions must be true to enter? Where is your stop? When do you stay out?
- Test on a demo account. Then review a meaningful sample of trades, not a handful.
- Go live small. Spreads, slippage and emotions change results. Risk only a small fraction of your account per trade.

The MT4/MT5 ecosystem has a large market of third-party indicators, and quality varies widely. Use this checklist before you spend money:
- Does it repaint? Some indicators redraw past signals so history looks perfect. Watch it live on a demo chart and see whether earlier signals change.
- Is the logic explained? If you can't understand what it calculates, you can't judge when it will fail.
- Are the results verified? Screenshots and backtests are easy to cherry-pick. Be skeptical of any claim implying consistent profits.
- What is the refund policy? Read the terms on the official site, and confirm current pricing and licensing details there rather than relying on third-party summaries.
- Which platform and version does it support? MT4 and MT5 files aren't interchangeable.
Pricing models vary, from subscriptions to one-off licenses, and extra costs can appear later. Our guide to forex indicator and bot pricing explains what to watch for.
What about free indicators?
Many free indicators are fine for learning, and some are excellent. The risks are the same as with paid ones: repainting, no support, and unclear logic. Read Are free forex indicators worth using? for a fuller breakdown.
When an Indicator Isn't the Right Tool
Indicators help you analyze charts, but they still need you to make decisions. If you want something that trades for you, or you'd rather follow someone else's trades, you're looking at a different category. Forex Indicator vs Bot vs Signal Service compares the three approaches and their tradeoffs.
- Signal tools: see Best Forex Signal Tools and Software Reviewed and MQL5 Signals Service Review. Following signals still means taking on the risk of someone else's strategy.
- Automation: see Best Forex Trading Bots and Robots Reviewed. For individual products, we have reviews such as Forex Fury EA and Scorpio Scalper, plus Scorpio Scalper alternatives. Automated systems can lose money, especially when market conditions change.
If you run an EA continuously, you may wonder about hosting. See Do you need a VPS to run a forex bot? and Best Forex VPS Providers Compared. Indicators alone usually don't need a VPS, but alerts or automation running 24/5 might.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Indicator stacking: Ten indicators rarely give ten independent confirmations. Many are derived from the same price data.
- Constantly switching: Changing tools after a few losing trades means you never learn whether the approach has an edge.
- Ignoring risk management: A good entry tool can't save an oversized position.
- Trusting perfect-looking charts: Hindsight makes any indicator look brilliant.
Bottom Line
Start with the built-in tools, keep your setup simple, and test thoroughly before risking real money. If you consider paid add-ons, verify claims independently, test on demo, and confirm current pricing and refund terms on the vendor's official site.
