No single broker has the tightest spreads for everyone. Raw-spread ECN-style accounts, such as those at IC Markets and Pepperstone, are commonly where traders find the lowest spreads, but they usually add a separate commission. Spreads change by pair, time of day, account type and market conditions, so confirm current figures on each broker's official site.
Why "tightest spread" is a tricky question
A quoted spread is only part of what you pay. Compare the all-in cost of a round trip trade, not the headline number.
- Commission: Raw accounts often show near-zero spreads but charge per lot. Standard accounts build the cost into a wider spread.
- Time of day: Spreads usually widen at rollover, during news releases and in thin liquidity.
- Pair: Major pairs like EUR/USD are typically cheaper to trade than exotics.
- Execution: Slippage and requotes can erase a spread advantage.
- Swaps and other fees: If you hold trades overnight, swaps can matter more than spread. See Forex Broker Fees Explained: Spreads, Commissions, Swaps and Withdrawal Costs.

Recommended for youBest Forex Brokers Reviewed: Regulation, Spreads, Fees and Platforms ComparedHow to test spreads fairly
- Open demo or small live accounts with two or three brokers.
- Watch the same pair at the same times, including a quiet session and a busy one.
- Add commission to the spread to get the total cost per lot.
- Place a few small trades and compare actual fill prices against quotes.
Don't let spreads override safety
A tight spread is worthless if you can't withdraw your money. Before funding an account, verify the broker's regulation, and understand the difference between an ECN broker and a market maker. Leveraged forex trading carries a high risk of loss, and low costs do not make a strategy profitable. Consider speaking with a licensed financial professional if you are unsure whether it suits your situation.
