Most traders do best with two to three indicators on a chart, and rarely more than four. Each one should answer a different question, such as trend direction, momentum or volatility. Adding more usually creates clutter and conflicting signals rather than better decisions, and no number of indicators removes the risk of losing trades.
Why more indicators rarely help
Many popular indicators are built from the same price data, so they often say the same thing in different ways. This is called redundancy. Stacking RSI, Stochastic and CCI, for example, gives you three momentum readings that tend to agree, which can feel like confirmation without adding much new information. When they do disagree, you end up hesitating or cherry-picking the one you like.
A practical way to choose
Pick one tool per job:
- Trend: a moving average or two. See What are the best moving average settings for forex trend trading?
- Momentum: RSI or MACD, not both unless you have a clear reason.
- Volatility: Bollinger Bands or ATR, useful for sizing stops and judging whether the market is quiet or stretched.
Quick guide by approach
| Style | Typical range | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Price-action focused | 0–2 | Indicators play a supporting role |
| Trend following | 2–3 | Trend filter plus one momentum or volatility tool |
| Short-term trading | 1–3 | Keep it simple, since speed matters. See the best timeframe for scalping |
These are common starting points, not rules. Your own testing matters more.
Recommended for youIndicator-Based Forex Strategies: How to Combine RSI, MACD, Moving Averages and Bollinger BandsSigns you have too many
- You can't explain what each indicator is for.
- Your chart is hard to read without squinting at the price.
- You regularly wait for every signal to line up and miss the setup.
- You add a new indicator after each losing trade.
How to test your setup
Write down your entry and exit rules, then test them on historical charts and on a demo account before risking real money. Past results do not predict future performance, and position sizing and stop placement usually matter more than the indicator choice. Only trade money you can afford to lose, and consider speaking with a licensed financial professional if you're unsure about your situation.
